Surfacing
The Process
When creating textures for Shakti, the surfacing department got together with the directors to brainstorm ideas for the final look. We first gathered references for all sorts of materials - cloth, concrete, palm leaves, asphalt, and more. To give the lighting department a head start, we made proxy materials for every asset during the first month of surfacing production:

Then we were on to making final textures! Some assets were perfect from the get-go, others needed several reviews and revisions to really fine-tune details and ensure we achieved our desired look and feel. The lighting team provided us with a warm, fiery light rig to make sure we hit the correct color and reflection values:
Finally, we were ready to send our textures off to the lighting department so we could see everything put together. Although we ran into some technical bumps and scrapes, we were able to get everything done.
